A diehard Dragonball fan has revealed a key date in the series' history. The death of Grandpa Gohan and the date when Bulma first met Goku have finally been revealed.
According to "Dragonball scholar" Derek Padula, Goku's adoptive grandfather died two years before Chapter 1 of the Dragonball manga. This information comes from Bird Land Press 15, a newsletter published every two months by the late Akira Toriyama. Padula translated it. Since Goku was 12 years old when Dragonball began, that means he lived alone for two years after Gohan's death. Gohan's death was the unfortunate result of Goku staring at the full moon at night and transforming into Oozaru, the "Great Ape."
Dragon Ball Fans Discover Big Answer to Goku's Origin Story 40 Years Later
Padula, who has written extensively about the Dragonball franchise, briefly explained his recent discovery on the popular Dragonball fan website Kanzenshuu. He pointed out the irony that no one knows the exact date of Gohan’s death, despite the fact that the newsletter containing the crucial information was released in November 1984, the same year that Dragonball Chapter 1 was published in Japan. Padula believes that what confused everyone was that in the story, Goku described his grandfather’s death as something that happened “a long time ago,” making the tragic event seem older than it actually was.
Now, 40 years later, Dragonball fans have finally gotten an answer to Goku’s origin story. One important thing to remember is that in Dragonball Chapter 1, Goku initially told Bulma that he was 14 years old. However, after training his body and mind under Master Roshi, Goku realizes that he is actually 12 years old. While the confusion over Goku’s age is part of the character, some fans have speculated that it was a retcon to make Goku more relatable to Shonen Jump’s younger readers.
In the final storyline of Dragon Ball, a three-year time jump occurs, causing the once childish Goku to grow into a young man for the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. As noted in the April 2024 issue of the Akira Toriyama Archive, finding the right adult design for Goku was a "trial and error" process. Some of Toriyama's early designs for Goku involved playing around with hair and facial designs, as well as dressing him up in different outfits.
Thanks to the worldwide popularity of Dragon Ball Z, most anime fans know Goku better from his adventures as an adult than as a child. However, the recently released Dragon Ball Daima takes us back to those early days as Goku and his friends are transformed into children while searching for a new set of Dragon Balls in the Demon World. Dragon Ball Daima premiered on October 11, 2024, and will end with 20 episodes on February 28, 2025.
New episodes of Dragon Ball Daima air every Friday on Crunchyroll. The English dub, starring Stephanie Nadolny as Goku (Mini), began airing one new episode a week on January 10. “Goku and his friends were living a peaceful life, until a conspiracy suddenly turned them into small creatures!” reads the official description of the series. “When they realize that the reason could be in a world called the ‘Demon King’s Domain,’ a mysterious young demon named Glorio appears before them.”
